BELGIAN SINGERS AND MUSIC
Today I want to tell you more about artists here in Belgium. I believe it is important for us all to know more also about art in other countries.
I have earlier written about two famous Belgians: Adolphe Sax, the inventor and first producer of the saxophone. And about Toots Thielemans, the world famous jazz musician. You can find my articles about them on my blog: https://knowing-about-this.blogspot.com
When classical music is concerned one of thebest known Belgian tenors is José Van Dam. He was born in 1940 – and is still active. Listen to him singing in Mozart’s Don Giovanni: https://youtu.be/ry1RuZTfP3M
He is one of the active artists behind the also famous Queen Elisabeth Competitions. It is since 1937 an annual competition for young artists from around the world – violinists, pionists, cellists and singers. They are invited to Belgium and will for some time work with experienced artists, incl. Van Dam. At the end they all take part in a competition, which can be seen on a lot of TV stations.

In more popular music one of the well-known and popular singers is Nathalie Meskens. She is also an actress. Listen to her: https://youtu.be/uDXF_-Upk4A
And last, but not least I want to present the very famous Belgian singer and song-writer Jacques Brel. He was born in Brussels in 1929 and died already in 1978, when he was 49 years old. He lived and performed most of his life in France. Read more about him:

One of his most well known songs is: Ne me Quitte pas ! ( Do not leave me !). You can here him sing it here – and also see English subtitles:

Another famous Brel song is: Le Plat Pays, qui est le Mien ( The Flat Country, which is Mine ). Many different singers have been singing it, incl. José Van Dam. But here you can here il maestro himself: https://youtu.be/rzeZcdW4Pbo
Songs and music are very popular in Belgium. The Flemish radio even has a digital channel, which 24/7 is broadcasting music – and hardly with any comments. It is called KLARA CONTINUO ( Klara = Classical Music ). We listen ourselves a lot to it on our internet radio. You may here it here: http://liveradio.be/radiozenders/klaracontinuo.htm
Have a lovely time with the singing and the music 😊
