POLAND - POSTPONEMENT OF ELECTIONS
My plan was to write about Poland today, because presidential elections were about to take place in the country day after tomorrow, May 10. But only yesterday it was for a number of reasons decided to postpone the elections until a later date. Therefore, my special comments in that context have also been postponed.
What I can say at this stage is that the Polish government tried to have agreement on an election to take place only by postal vote. The opposition in Parliament was against this idea, because it claimed that such an election with not be secret – as demanded by the Polish constitution. The Polish Supreme Court was on the same wavelength. A number of NGOs have said the same.
The result was that the government accepted to postpone the elections, also for logistical reasons. It tried to get agreement that the present president would be prolonged for two years without any election. But that was turned down as well. The president’s present term expires on August 6. It remains to be seen which date for the elections will be decided.
See also my notes on Poland from April 12, 2020. They are still valid – except the date for the elections.
Tomorrow I will write about EUROPE DAY – which is tomorrow, May 9.
